The ZooTampa at Lowery Park is operated by the Lowry Park Zoological Society, an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to excellence in conservation, education, recreation and research.

Employees and volunteers should note that they are representing the ZooTampa and our efforts at all times, with or without a uniform on. It is important to understand our ethical code and to honor our mission, and this includes your personal and online presence. Social media is a popular way of communicating with the public, and is a great way to show all of the good work the zoo is doing for animals. Employees and volunteers should be aware of our code of ethics when representing ZooTampa, as well as consider the following guidelines when posting on personal or professional platforms.

Code of Ethics

1. Recognize and understand the moral responsibilities of the individual and the institution not only to our professional associates, fellow employees and volunteers, and the public, but also to the animals under our care.

2. Promote the interests of wildlife conservation and animal welfare to the public and to colleagues.

3. Understand the importance of working with qualified zoos/aquariums and other qualified persons/organizations in breeding programs of endangered and other species.

4. Work at all times to provide the best care to our animals. This includes answering questions in person and on social media platforms to help educate the public on animals in our care.

5. Employees or volunteers shall not knowingly engage in activities that are harmful to animals, and will, to the best of his or her ability, cooperate with governmental agencies regulating animal welfare and animal transactions.

6. Employees or volunteers shall not alter animal records or alter the facts concerning age, condition, or other material information about any animal in order to affect the sale, trade, loan, or other transaction with respect to such animal.

7. Social media posts should be posted with a positive, educational tone, and should spread the message of the good work we’re doing. It is our responsibility to teach the public about the animals of the world, and how we can live among them.

8. Social media posts should highlight the animals in our care, and should always be transparent about any concerns with an animal.

9. Some will not agree with animal captivity, and may have negative feelings towards the zoo. All interactions with the public, whether in person or online, will remain professional and respectful.

10. All social media posts will be done with the goal to make a positive impact for the animals and the public, and to engage with animal lovers.

11. Employees and volunteers will not use their personal social media profiles to speak negatively about the Zoo, animal welfare or any zoo-related efforts including other employees or volunteers.

When employees and volunteers follow these guidelines, they will ensure they are living up to our mission of conservation, education, recreation and research.
